Haag’s Research on Shingle Thickness

In 2011, Haag acquired 76 models of shingles from U.S. manufacturers. This research was essential to measure the thickness of shingles and compare them against the manufacturers’ warranties. However, testing revealed that laminated shingles couldn’t be separated into warranty categories based on thickness alone. The thicknesses of newer “lifetime” shingles varied significantly, and many manufacturers limited their “lifetime” warranties to residential installations. Additionally, they applied different year designations for commercial-use installations. As a result, Haag couldn’t create an updated gauge to include laminated shingles due to the lack of a strong correlation between warranty and thickness.
